Infrastructure in Transition - Driving the Future
Challenges & Political Priorities
Germany’s infrastructure is under pressure: ageing bridges, overloaded transport networks and deteriorating utility grids must now meet rising demands for climate protection, digitalisation and resilience. The new federal government has announced significant investments in its 2025 coalition agreement — aiming to resolve the modernisation backlog and secure competitiveness.
A key instrument is the new Infrastructure Special Fund worth €500 billion. This will provide long-term funding for projects in road and civil engineering, bridge renovation, rail transport, digital networks and public services. Faster approval processes, greater planning certainty and the planned Infrastructure for the Future Act are expected to bring new momentum to the sector.
Technological Innovations & New Processes
At the technical level, much is changing: sustainable building materials, recycled asphalt and CO?-reducing methods are becoming increasingly important. Digital twins, automated construction monitoring and smart measuring technologies enable more precise planning, more efficient construction and predictive maintenance — from sewer systems to long-distance water pipelines.
